The Constant Defense

  • “It is not because there are laws, and not because I have rights, that I am entitled to defend myself; it is because I defend myself that my rights exist and the law respects me. It is thus first of all the dynamic of defense which is able to give law and rights the value which is indispensable for us. A right is nothing unless it comes to life in the defense which occasions its invocation”

The Constant Defense

The way our society organizes itself today is the result of a history full of struggles. However, it is not only a past history, but rather an ongoing process of losses, gains, moving forwards and backwards that our collective emotions and memories as a society get formed by.

We all were and are part of this process, influencing it and being influenced by it. We constantly redefine the boundaries of our society, we exclude people or get excluded. We become continuously aware of new identities in the society and based on that we reorganize ourselves. These new boundaries generate other forms and qualities of exclusion that cause the necessity of new struggles. This repetition reminds us that a society is alive, but also suggests the possibility of reapiting the painful past.

In this photo series I try to record a small part of the beauty, ugliness, joys and pains of being alive as a society.
